Having been among the frontrunners for nominations, Martin McDonagh’s dark Irish comedy The Banshees of Inisherin has been awarded three Golden Globes at the 80th edition in Los Angeles.
Irish actor Colin Farrell won the award for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy, having been nominated alongside Diego Calva (Babylon), Daniel Craig (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Adam Driver (White Noise), and Ralph Fiennes (The Menu).

Farrell was the only member of the Banshees cast to emerge victorious following McDonagh’s entire leading cast being nominated for a Golden Globe, including Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson, and Barry Keoghan. Speaking with IFTN earlier this year, McDonagh explained how each of the four characters were written specifically with each actors in mind.
Having been nominated for three awards across Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, Best Director – Motion Picture, as well as Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, McDonagh received both the Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture award on the night. McDonagh fending off stiff competition from writers such as Todd Field (Tár), Tony Kushner & Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans), Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Sarah Polley (Women Talking), as well as films such as Babylon, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Triangle of Sadness.

Domhnall Gleeson missed out in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television category for his performance on The Patient. Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird) picked up the award, beating competition from Gleeson, F. Murray Abraham (The White Lotus), Richard Jenkins (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), and Seth Rogen (Pam and Tommy).

Speaking previously about the films Golden Globes achievement, Colin Farrell said: “What a team effort and a joy it was to bring The Banshees to life… to be able to celebrate with the whole gang like this and represent all the crew members who are watching at home, makes the whole thing all the sweeter! As Brendan said, ‘Happy Days’ and thanks Golden Globes!”
Celebrating its 80th edition, the Golden Globes returned to NBC this January following a hiatus with the long-time network partner earlier this year. This came following a slew of controversial revelations about the operations of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
Last year, NBC, which has broadcast the Awards since 1996, declined to air the 79th edition of the awards show as a result of an entertainment industry boycott, sparked by Los Angeles Times exposés in February 2021. The article revealed that the Golden Globes organization, HFPA, contained a membership lacking any Black representation and a history of engaging in suspect financial practices and unethical conduct.
Since then, HFPA has implemented numerous reforms, including the banning of members accepting gifts from contenders and introduction of a hotline for reporting misconduct. 103 internationally based voters and 21 additional members, who are U.S.-based journalists working for outlets abroad, have been added to the membership. According to the HFPA, the organisation now has a voting pool that is 52 percent female and 51.5 percent racially and ethnically diverse.
These reforms were accompanied by the news back in July 2022 that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had been acquired by Eldridge Industries and has since turned into a for-profit entity.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, HFPA president Helen Hoehne said: “This is really not the old HFPA anymore. Over the past 18 months — almost two years now — we took a deep look inward and listened to the criticism. … And we built a new infrastructure that transformed our organization, and the awards show into something that is more diverse, transparent, and responsive.”
More categories have also been created by the HFPA by breaking up its supporting actor and supporting actress honours into separate awards for ongoing TV series and limited/anthology series or TV movie. The supporting acting TV categories previously included contenders from ongoing TV series, limited series, and TV movies.
The 2023 Golden Globes were hosted by Jerrod Carmichael and aired live from the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday, January 10th on NBC and Peacock.
